Fights Free Radicals, Treats Diabetes, Boosts The Efficiency Of Vitamins C&E
Alpha Lipoic Acid is a vitamin like substance that is naturally produced in the body. It plays a major role in defending the body against free radical attack and is often used as treatment for diabetes. As we age, our bodies are not as efficient when it comes to the production of those self-made antioxidants. And when I use the term “age” that doesn’t necessarily refer to the elderly only. In some cases the body starts to slow down around age 30.
Unlike other antioxidants that have a specific specialty in the body, Lipoic Acid would fall into the “Free Lance Category”. It can take on a multiplicity of antioxidant roles depending upon which antioxidants in the body are low at any given time. For example, if the body is low on Vitamin D and E, Lipoic Acid will temporarily fill those voids. You might say Lipoic Acid acts as a “Pinch Hitter” for the body’s immune system. It also enhances the efficiency of Vitamins C and E.
In one interesting case back in the 1970s, Dr. Burton Berkson MD from the National Institute of Health, made a groundbreaking discovery. He discovered that Lipoic Acid could cure Mycetism. Mycetism is an often fatal disease caused by eating poison mushrooms. This disease was fatal 90% of the time before Lipoic Acid was introduced.
Lipoic Acid is extremely important in the normalization of blood sugar levels. High blood sugar is a common problem and is a major cause of insulin resistance (Type II Diabetes) which affects approximately 30 million people worldwide. In recent animal studies, Lipoic Acid completely reversed damage caused by stroke. More studies are needed but it seems as if Lipoic Acid has become a major player in the field of supplemental health.
